Trieste: menekülés a hó elől / escaping the snow

Bevallom őszintén, nem igazán szeretem a telet. Hiába tud gyönyörű lenni a havas táj, a másik oldalon ott a hideg, a szürkeség, a rövid nappalok és néha még a csúszós utak is. Amikor egyik pénteken az időkép mindenféle téli csapadékot ígért a hétvégére, Trieszt környékén pedig szinte tavasz volt, foglaltam gyorsan egy szállást, aztán szombaton reggel elindultunk Itália felé.
Honestly I'm not a fan of winter. Beautiful as a snowy landscape can be, it comes with cold, gloom, short days and sometimes slippery roads too. One Friday, when the weather forecast promised all sorts of winter precipitation for the weekend while it seemed like spring around Trieste, I booked a room and then set off to Italy the next morning.
We left Budapest at 7 in the morning, drove along the M7 highway and across Slovenia, took a brief rest near Ljubljana and by noon we were descending down the brutally steep streets of Trieste towards the sea. We parked our car on Viale Miramare that runs along the coast and a few minutes later we were having coffee with this view. After -2 Celsius and overcast skies in Budapest, we were greeted with sunshine and a balmy 11 Celsius.

Végigsétáltunk a parti sétányon a Miramare-kastélyig. A tél közepén alig járt erre valaki, úgyhogy szinte csak a sirályokat lehetett hallani.
We strolled along the seaside promenade all the way to Miramare Castle. There was hardly anyone around in mid-winter so it was mostly just us and the seagulls.

Miramare means "looking out to sea" and, true to the name, this is the view of the Adriatic from the castle garden.

Itt szinte érintetlen a meredek sziklafalak alkotta partszakasz.
From the highway it may look like Trieste is surrounded by nothing but industrial plants and densely populated villages, but there are in fact a number of seaside promenades. From Miramare it took about 10 minutes by car to reach Sentiero Rilke that runs between Sistiana and Duino. We took a late afternoon stroll amid towering rocks in a landscape barely touched by human development.

Pre-dinner aperitivo in downtown Trieste. Of course it wasn't warm but it was definitely bearable and we were far from being the only ones having a drink outside.

Trieste was under Austrian rule for quite some time and is probably the least Italian-like city but this also makes it unique. The main square, named Piazza Unitá d'Italia to honor the unity of Italy, is the most spectacular place in town but its beauty reaches a whole new level when illuminated.

We were so happy about the weather that we wanted to be outside as much as possible, so next morning we headed to Strada Napoleonica in the hills around Trieste, between San Nazario and Opicina. This is partly a concrete promenade and partly an easily navigable forest path and we spent Sunday morning walking its entire length.

A short detour from the main path leads to the sanctuary of Monte Grisa. During WW2, the bishop of Trieste vowed to build a church if the city is spared destruction: he kept his word and this unusually designed church was inaugurated in 1966. It's supposed to form the letter M in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Monte Grisa affords an incredible view over the entire Gulf of Trieste but I opted for this view that we saw toward the end of our roughly 8 km walk to Opicina and back.

If Trieste doesn't feel Italian enough, nearby Muggia definitely does. The only Istrian town held by Italy has everything that makes me love small towns in Italy: a medieval cathedral, a cute old town, a main square with cafés, good restaurants and even a fishing port.

Egy kis street food: calamari fritti, azaz sült tintahal.
Street food in Muggia: fried squid (calamari fritti).

Egyik oldalán hegyek, a másikon a tenger: Muggia a kikötőből nézve is nagyon szép.
Mountains on one side, the sea on the other: Muggia is beautiful when viewed from the port too.

We still had time for coffee near the fishing port. It wasn't easy to leave this place but we had to head back home to go to work on Monday. Another 5 hours in the car and we were home again: we drove a total of 1200 km in two days and walked 44100 steps according to my phone. We saw the sunlight glimmering on the sea, felt the fresh air, heard seagulls, walked pretty streets, visited medieval churches, had Italian coffee and prosecco and tasted great seafood: it was definitely worth it.
