Vonattal Európa tetejére / Train to the top of Europe

Ezek a sarokkövei életem eddigi talán leglátványosabb vonatozásának. A helyszín Svájc, a részletekről meséljenek az alábbi képek.
A distance of 11 miles only, 1.5 hours, 1 transfer and a roundtrip price tag of around 190 CHF. These are the cornerstones of a railroad trip in Switzerland that is probably the most spectacular I've ever taken. Let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Even before I boarded the train in the village of Grindelwald, deep in the Bernese Alps, I was already at an altitude of 3392 ft, which is 66ft above the highest point in Hungary. The little yellow-green train had hardly left the station (bang on time of course) when we were already surrounded by stunning scenery.
The first section is around 6 miles long and goes to Kleine Scheidegg station (at 6762 ft). The weather is notoriously unpredictable here. When I took the previous photo in April, we set off in sunny weather but ended up with gloomy skies at Kleine Scheidegg. Another trip in July started sunny too but we arrived in such thick fog that the building adjacent to the station was hardly visible. Then a third trip in August finally allowed me to continue to the second section.
Ilyen a Kleine Scheidegg állomás, amikor jön a köd. A piros-sárga vonatok mennek tovább a Jungfraujoch, azaz Európa legmagasabban fekvő vasútállomása felé.
This is what Kleine Scheidegg station looks like when fog is rolling in. The red-yellow trains go all the way to Jungfraujoch, the highest railroad station in Europe.
The air is so fresh that you can almost bite it, but a bratwurst is probably more substantial. :)
Itt már tényleg haladunk Európa teteje felé, azaz a Jungfraujoch állomásra. Balra a Mönch (4107 m) látható.
This time we're really going all the way to Jungfraujoch. The Mönch (13 474 ft) rises on the left.

So this is what we came for. The Jungfraubahn, operating the 5.5 mile route from Kleine Scheidegg since 1912, has its terminus at 11 332 ft. Only in Peru and Tibet do trains travel higher than this.

This is Switzerland, so views don't just come looking out the train window. There's perfect infrastructure around Jungfraujoch station too.
Anything under 10 000 ft looks like a small hill here. At 13 642 ft though, the summit of Jungfrau manages to stand out.
Induláskor Grindelwaldban 20°C volt, itt 1°C.
It was 68°F when we set off from Grindelwald. Up here, it was a crisp 34 °F.

Towering peaks and the Aletsch glacier in between: the whole area has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The railroad does pass through a couple of tunnels but when it's not inside one, the views are really stunning. Eiger is just at the left edge on this photo, while Mönch and Jungfrau are visible in all their splendor. To see all this, grab a seat on the right side on the way up to Jungfraujoch and go for the left side on the way back.
We're descending back to Grindelwald now. The scenery is stunning all the way but good weather is a must here, so it's best to do some advance planning. Jungfrau.ch has all the timetables along with weather info, webcams and an online ticket shop. While 190 CHF might be almost as steep as the mountains here, this is really an unforgettable trip.
