As winter approaches, the small town of Tata - about an hour's drive from Budapest or just under two hours from Vienna - becomes a hotspot of wild geese migrating from Scandinavia. Around early November, the birds start arriving to spend the winter on Öreg-tó, a lake smack down in the center of the town. Their numbers climb steadily by the day and can eventually reach 50 000 or even beyond.
Amazing birdwatching, lakeside walks among sycamore trees, views of a medieval castle and a restaurant with a Michelin-starred chef: go to Tata and you might just have the perfect weekend.
A tél közeledtével a tatai Öreg-tavat megszállják a vadludak. A telelni érkező madarak száma napról napra növekszik, mígnem aztán több tízezren népesítik be a tavat. Néhány évben még az ötvenezernél is többen vannak. Akit érdekel, ilyenkor érdemes figyelni a nagyobb hírportálokat, mert rendszeresen be is számolnak róla, hogy éppen mennyi vadlúd van Tatán. A madárnézegetés mellett ott van még a középkori vár, a platánfákkal szegélyezett tópart, a Platán éttermet pedig Michelin-csillagos séf vezeti: minden adott egy tökéletes hétvégéhez.

| Each morning the birds fly out in massive numbers to find food. We got up very early to make sure we don't miss it. There were hardly any geese in the air yet but the dawn colors were beautiful. A vadludak minden reggel tömegesen kihúznak, hogy élelmet keressenek. Jó korán keltünk, nehogy lemaradjunk róla: ekkor még csak néhány madár repkedett, a hajnali színek viszont gyönyörűek voltak. |

| The birds' sound grew ever louder then all of a sudden they started flying by the thousands. For about two-three minutes, they filled the sky in ever bigger waves as they passed over the castle.
