Just a stone's throw away from Rome lies the beautiful volcanic lake known as Lago Albano. A popular country retreat since ancient Roman times, today it is surrounded by numerous appealing villages and towns, the most famous of which is CASTEL GANDOLFO. Small as it is, this town has all the makings of a great destination: beautiful setting, notable monuments, historic significance, pleasant atmosphere and good restaurants.
Mindössze kőhajításnyira fekszik Rómától egy gyönyörű, vulkáni eredetű tó, amelynek olasz neve Lago Albano. Már az ókori rómaiak is kedvelték ezt a vidéket, amely ma számos szépséges falu és kisváros otthona. Ezek leghíresebbike CASTEL GANDOLFO. Bár a település elég kicsi, megvan benne minden, ami egy kiváló úticélhoz kell: gyönyörű fekvés, látványos és történelmileg jelentős épületek, kellemes hangulat és klassz éttermek.

The focal point of the small historic center is Piazza della Libertá with the Church of San Tommaso da Villanova rising above the square. It was designed by none other than Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the biggest names in Italian architecture and the same man who gave us the elliptical colonnade in front of St Peter's Basilica.
Az apró óváros központja a Piazza della Libertá. A tér fölé magasodó San Tommaso da Villanova templom tervezője nem más, mint Gian Lorenzo Bernini, az olasz építészet egyik legnagyobb alakja, akinek nevéhez többek között a Szent Péter-bazilika előtti ovális oszlopsor is fűződik.

However, what really put Castel Gandolfo on the map is the fact that the summer residence of the Pope is located here. Though the Palazzo del Pontificio looks humble from the outside, its importance has led the late John Paul II to dub it "the second Vatican". The current pope, Francis, also spends his summers here and is said to occasionally fly down by helicopter for shorter visits too, e.g. right after Easter to recharge his batteries after the super-busy Holy Week.
Castel Gandolfo azonban elsősorban azért nevezetes, mert itt található a pápák nyári rezidenciája. Bár a Palazzo del Pontificio kívülről nem hivalkodó, a jelentősége miatt a néhai II. János Pál gyakran "második Vatikán"-ként emlegette. Elődeihez hasonlóan Ferenc pápa is itt tölti a nyarakat, időnként pedig állítólag leugrik ide helikopterrel rövidebb látogatásokra is, például kipihenni a nagyhét fáradalmait Húsvét után.

It was Lago Albano I introduced this post with and I am now ending it with two photos of it. Having first seen the lake on an overcast day, its true beauty was yet to reveal itself. However, we did wake up to splendid sunshine the next morning and came to realize how great an idea it had been to book a lakeview room:
Ezt a bejegyzést a Lago Albano említésével indítottam, befejezni pedig két, a tóról készült fotóval fogom. Elsőként egy borús napon láttuk a tavat, így a valódi szépsége rejtve maradt előlünk. Másnap reggel azonban csodálatos napsütésre ébredtünk és egyből megállapítottuk, hogy mennyire jó ötlet volt tóra néző szobát foglalni:
